What to Expect During Your Newborn Photo Session

Newborn Photographers in Cary and Raleigh | SMA Photography

In this post in my Cary Newborn Photography FAQ series, I’m sharing the behind the scenes details on what you can expect during your newborn photo session at home with SMA Photography. Read more from this FAQ series through the links at the bottom of this post.

Newborn Photography is one of the most important photography investments you can make, which is why it’s so important to choose a professional newborn photographer that specializes in newborn photography and provides consistent, excellent quality images. Because this investment can be more expensive, you may be wondering how it all works on the big day. What can you expect during your baby’s Newborn Photo Session with SMA Photography?

What to Expect: Newborn Photo Session

After your Newborn Photography Session with SMA Photography is booked and your baby arrives, we’ll schedule your Newborn Photo Session to occur when your baby is about 7-10 days old.

I prefer to wait to schedule your baby’s specific day and time for his Newborn Photo Session until after your baby’s birth. So few babies arrive on their due date, and I find it’s less stressful for everyone to do it this way. But rest assured, once you book your newborn photo session, your baby is officially set for newborn photos.

For families that take advantage of the complimentary Fresh 48 Photo Session at the hospital (or home), we’ll finalize your Newborn Photo Session date and time at the end of those photos. If you choose the Newborn Photo Session only, you’ll call or text me once your baby arrives, and we’ll choose a day and time that works for your schedule within that 7-10 day range.

If your baby has already arrived or needs extra time in the hospital for any reason, we can schedule your baby’s newborn photo session any time up to about 1 month after he or she comes home.

When I arrive at your home on the day of your Newborn Photo Session, I’ll take a few moments to meet any of the family members I’ve not yet met, whether this be your spouse, older children, or your baby’s grandparents.

I’ll also spend a few minutes looking at the space in your home and determining whether we’ll start in your baby’s nursery, your room, the living room, or another room of the house. I’ll raise any blinds to let in as much natural light as possible, and then we’ll get started.

Your baby’s Newborn Photo Session will last 1-1.5 hours. During our time together, I’ll capture photos (and video) of your baby in your arms, with your husband, with your baby’s siblings, and combinations of all of the above. I’ll also spend some time photographing just your baby, as the star of the photo session.

I always spend some time taking some swaddled photos, as well as detail photos of your baby’s hands and feet.

During our time together, I’ll be capturing the details that show the love that fills your home for your newborn baby, all while chatting with you about your new baby.

Your baby may cry, sleep, or watch everything around her. She may get hungry or want cuddles. All of this is wonderful and will result in gorgeous photos that will help you remember how sweet this time is.

I’ll encourage you to talk to, comfort, and take care of your baby in your usual way so that your lifestyle newborn photo session can be as unposed and candid as possible. This is what allows me to create beautiful, meaningful photos of this newborn stage for you.

About two weeks after your baby’s Newborn Photo Session, I’ll deliver your gallery of edited photos and video from both the Newborn and Fresh 48 Photo Sessions.

The first days and weeks of your baby’s life are so special, and the details of this newborn stage are so fleeting. It’s an honor to help Cary, Apex, and Holly Springs area families hold onto this real life sweetness through a Newborn Photo Session at home. Please feel free to reach out to me with any other questions you have about Newborn Photography with SMA Photography.
