Newborn Video FAQ

SMA Photography Videography| Cary Newborn Photography and Video with Stacey Adams

This post is the third part of my Newborn Photo FAQ blog series, answering several of the questions I receive about newborn photography - and in the case of this post - video. Links to more from this series can be found at the bottom of this post.

Having the video that captures those moments in motion is something that is so special, and I’m so glad we chose it. For me, it was really emotional to see our lives captured on film, and we’re so grateful to have it.

We’re all familiar with the saying, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” I’d add that video is worth a million, and many of my clients here in North Carolina agree.

For me, video is a normal part of my newborn photo sessions and something I’ve been doing since early 2016. But I also understand that the idea of having a newborn family film made by your photographer is brand new for many people.

The Video Shift

I actually think of the shift into video much like the the change that happened 15-20 years ago, when families moved away from studio family portraits and towards outdoor, natural environments for their family photo sessions. More recently, there’s been another transition into photo sessions at home. (My favorite!)

Family films are the new way of experiencing a photo session, and even better, it’s possible to have both photos and video in your newborn photography session.

I’ve put together a few of the most commonly asked questions I receive about my newborn and family films for those who are interested in knowing more about how this process works and what these videos are like.

Newborn Video Story FAQ

How are Newborn Films different from the videos we take everyday on our phones?

Just as the newborn photos on my website are much higher quality than the photos we capture on our phones, the video I capture during your newborn photo session and edit into a film is, too.

Don’t get me wrong - we all love the iphone videos we take of our kids. (As we should!) But these newborn films are completely different. They’re high quality, professional videos that are edited into a story of memories, complete with sound and music to help you relive the best parts of your baby’s newborn days. They’re emotional, detailed, and beautiful.

Will video detract from our photos?

Definitely not. I have a great deal of experience in capturing both photos and video within the same session, and I have chosen a newborn session length (1 to 1.5 hours) that allows me plenty of time to get a variety of gorgeous shots in both formats so that you can remember the sweetest parts of your baby’s newborn phase. I would never allow video to detract from the photos that are most important to you and your family.

What equipment do you use to take the video?

I use the same camera I use for photography (a Nikon D750) for video, as well. Just as for your photos, I’m in control of all aspects of the camera, from exposure to focus to movement. The camera has 1080p video capability, and can be used for feature length projects, but during your newborn or family photo session, it will feel like a normal, professional photographer’s camera.

There are no additional lighting set ups or attachments, and most clients barely notice me transitioning between photo and video modes. In essence, the experience won’t feel any different than a normal lifestyle photo session. During our time together, we’ll chat and laugh as you take care of and cuddle your baby. I’ll switch between photo and video modes on my camera, capturing beautiful moments in both formats. After your photo session is over, I’ll edit together the clips into a moving and unique film that highlights just how special this time really is.

I keep seeing the words “film” and “video”. What’s the difference between the two?

No difference! Typically the final edited video is called a “film,” because it’s shot and edited at the same frame rate as feature films, but I will understand what you’re talking about, whether you use the word video or film.

What is the investment for adding video to my newborn photo session?

There are 2 options.

The Mini Video Story is perfect for families who want to try out video, but aren’t sure how they feel about it. These films are 1-2 minutes in length and focus on one session only (either the Fresh 48 or the Newborn). The Mini Newborn Video Story is currently included as an option within the Essential and Timeless Newborn Photo Collections. It’s also available as an add on for $350.

The Full Newborn Video Story is 4+ minutes in length and can include footage from both the Fresh 48 and Newborn Sessions. This option is wonderful for families who know they love video and are excited to hear the extra coos and tiny cries. The investment to add a Full Newborn Video Story to your session is $750. ($400 to upgrade your video from a Mini Video Story to a Full Newborn Video Story.)

You have to experience it. There’s something different about the way this kind of video touches your heart. The production and quality are incredible, and Stacey captures the little things that make it so special.

I’m participating in a blog circle this month with other newborn and family photographers who do beautiful work, so please head over to Anna Rasmussen’s blog to see her Okinawa Beach Portraits. All of Anna’s work is so lovely, and seeing this family photo session had me really wishing for some time at the beach!
