Underwater Children's Portraits | Albuquerque, NM

I’m a summer person.
From my school days, to my time as an elementary school teacher, to now, as a mother, summer, for me, has always meant freedom.
Freedom from schedules. From outside stresses. From to-do lists.
And so it’s no surprise that summer is always time of creative recharging for me, as well.
For the past several summers - as long as we’ve lived in this house - I’ve been stretching my photography and my artistic muscles, while my boys stretch their literal muscles in our pool.
Underwater photography of my kids has become something we all look forward to every year.
They love the novelty and seeing what they look like when they swim.
I love the reflections swimming on the surface,
the air bubbles that trail and surround them,
and the imperfections in each frame, that, for me, make each one absolutely perfect.
Most of all, I love the dreamy, almost other-worldly, way these photos make me feel. As if they’ll always be my little boys, playing together in our backyard pool.
Each year my boys grow and change, and I love this tradition we’ve started. This way to mark the time, to celebrate the freedom of summer, and to stretch creatively.
It’s truly a breath of fresh air in the middle of summer.

I’m participating in a blog circle with several other talented photographers this month, where we’re each sharing some of our favorite images. This post by Northumberland Wedding Photographer, Fiona Saxton took my breath away with her gorgeous images of a very special wedding day.
